Learn how Princess Diana’s jaw-dropping ‘Revenge Dress’ owned its name

With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, many old stories and incidents have come to the fore once again. From the Queen’s wedding necklace to the revenge dress of Diana, the late Princess of Wales and first wife of King Charles III. Diana was one of the most loved royal family members in the world.

And now Diana’s bold black dress is in the news again. The off-shoulder figure-hugging mini dress was curated by lesser-known Greek designer Christina Stambolian. It had a plunging neckline with an asymmetrical hemline. She teamed this dress with a huge sapphire and pearl choker. She completed her look with a sheer stocking, black high heels and a matching clutch. Her deadpan was perfectly timed with King Charles’s ITV interview with Jonathan Dimbleby, where he confessed to having been unfaithful during their marriage.

In the Channel 5 documentary Secrets from the Royal Dressmakers, her former butler Paul Burrell revealed that he was the one who took the dress out of her closest in 1991. In the documentary, she called and said that she was in doubt about attending the ceremony. She said, “She said, ‘I can’t go on, I can’t face the world knowing what Charles just said. And I have nothing to wear anyway.’ I went to her wardrobe room and took out the Christina Stambolian dress and showed it to her.

She continued and said that he asked her to try on the dress and she looked like ‘a million dollars’.

Her late fashion stylist and friend Anna Harvey shared in the 2013 documentary Princess Diana’s Dresses: The Auction that after learning of Charles’ confession from interview previews, she turned her head into whatever she wore that night. I wanted to keep it high. According to Ana, when Valentino revealed that she was going to wear one of his outfits for the night, she didn’t want him to wear the original outfit.

Following the incident, the next morning Diana landed on the front pages of the newspapers and the dress was dubbed a revenge dress. However, on August 31, 1997, Diana died in a tragic car accident in Paris, France.
