MVD official says permits of obstructed vehicles will be canceled for serious violations like use of tampered speed governors.

Enforcement squads of the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) initiated legal action against the owners and drivers of 34 tourist buses in Kozhikode district as part of a state-wide special drive against violation of safety norms.

A total of 34 buses were intercepted on Thursday and Friday as part of an aggressive investigation in the wake of the Vadakkanchery accident, MVD officials said.

Spot action was initiated on noticing illegal alterations and fittings such as laser lights, restricted multi-tone horns and multi-colour LEDs. The special squad members said that the vehicles would be blacklisted if they are not re-presented for inspection within the specified date after removal of the illegal fittings.

“Permits for obstructed vehicles will be canceled for serious violations like use of tempered speed governors. Licenses of drivers operating such vehicles will be suspended,” said an inspector attached to the MVD enforcement squad. According to him, some vehicles were blacklisted on Thursday itself.

MVD officials said that there was no laxity on their part in implementing the rules. He said that last month the permits of some city buses were also canceled on charges of road racing.

Meanwhile, leaders of the Contract Carriage Operators Association (CCOA) alleged that lapses in road enforcement activities are spoiling the business of genuine entrepreneurs who operate services in compliance with all rules and regulations. He claimed that only a small percentage of operators were found to be violating the rules and should be punished.
