Lekhpal in Jhansi caught demanding bribe on cam, held | Kanpur News – Times of India

JHANSI: The Jhansi Sadar lekhpal was on Thursday arrested after a video, in which he is purportedly seen demanding a bribe from an applicant went viral on social media. He was later suspended.
The one-minute undated video clip purportedly shows lekhpal Santosh Gaur, probably sitting in an office wearing vest and underpants, asking 50% bribe in advance form an applicant in lieu of doing some official work.
When the applicant, who could only be heard, tells him to take the money after the work is done or by cheque, the lekhpal demands it immediately while saying that he has to pass it to his seniors, including the ADM. “Bribe is never taken in check, it is always taken in cash. What if the ADM demands immediately…I have to then hand it over at that time,” Gaur is heard saying in the video.
City magistrate Rajesh Kumar and SDM Sadar Sanya Chhabra held a joint press conference in the collectorate on Thursday. They said, “In view of government’s zero tolerance policy against corruption, and based on facts shown in the video clip, a case has been lodged against Gaur in Sipri Bazar police station under sections 504, 506 IPC and section 13(1)A, 13(1)B, 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.”
“The accused lekhpal has been suspended and arrested and will be presented in the court. The administration is strictly following the zero tolerance policy against corruption,” the city magistrate added.
