Lena Durr leads World Cup slalom ahead of Petra Vlahova, Mikaela Shiffrin

German skier Lena Dürer was the fastest in the opening round of a Women’s World Cup slalom, leading a tight group of six skiers that also included Petra Vlhova and Mikaela Schiffrin.

The six were separated by less than four-tenths of a second before the second run.

Starting the race, Durr mastered the Olympia course, but lost time with a mistake in the flat finish section, which prevented him from taking a big lead.

“It annoys me. I’ve seen others split time and I’ve lost a lot of time there. When you make a mistake there the momentum is gone,” Durr said.

Olympic slalom champion Vlhova of Slovakia finished second, 0.08 seconds behind Sweden’s Anna Sven Larsson.

Schiffrin finished fourth and had 0.25 seconds to make up for Durer in the second run. His American teammate Paula Moltzen was 0.65 behind in ninth.

Katharina Linsberger of Austria and Michelle Gisin of Switzerland rounded out the top six. The day after crashing in a giant slalom, Gisin’s teammate Wendy Holdner abandoned the race.

Vlhová has already won the slalom season title, but is chasing leader Shifrin in the overall standings.

The Slovakian reduced his deficit to 77 points by winning Friday’s GS and, if he finishes ahead of the American in Saturday’s race, could further narrow the gap in the last event before the World Cup final in Maribel, France, next week. Will give

Dürer could become the first German winner of the women’s slalom in nearly 10 years, following Maria Höfl-Risch’s victory at the Levy in November 2012.

Dürer, who won the City event in Moscow nine years ago and scored his only World Cup win to date, has three podiums in slalom this season. She led the Olympic race in Beijing after the first run, but missed out on a medal after finishing fourth.
