The devastating consequences of climate change have made their presence felt quite strongly in the world today, the truth is that the man-made catastrophe of global warming can only be mitigated by collective efforts. India has become one of the world’s biggest emitters of greenhouse gases, and it is imperative that it join the climate mitigation bandwagon (Page 1, “India will push for ‘climate justice’ at global summit, says minister”) , 29 October). What is unjust and unacceptable, however, is that historical pollsters are conveniently ignoring the clause of ‘common but differentiated responsibility’ enshrined in the 2015 Paris Agreement.

The Indian Prime Minister and his French counterpart jointly launched the International Solar Alliance; The country has set a target of installing 450 GW of renewable energy by 2030; Besides a mission for hydrogen, a strong electric vehicle policy, and steadily increasing its forest cover, all prove that India has recognized the need for global climate change mitigation efforts.

The recent case of alleged drug seizure and arrest of high-profile celebrities on a cruise ship highlights the growing menace of drug consumption in India, especially among the youth. It is no exaggeration to say that Mumbai has a culture of rave drug parties. Why doesn’t the Narcotics Control Bureau break the whip? While walking down the Colaba Causeway, young people can often be seen consuming drugs in the narrow streets and alleys. There are also people who are on the margins of the society who indulge in drugs. Concrete steps need to be taken to educate everyone, especially the youth, on the dangers of substance abuse.

The way the high-profile case has been handled raises more questions than answers. The way the investigation has progressed is a matter of concern. The series of controversies that have arisen will surely open Pandora’s box. The matter did not drag on for months.

Appreciating the status of the iconic actor, Rajinikanth, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu indirectly highlighted the state of cinema today, which is quite different from its objective of being a carrier of social, moral and ethical messages. This should serve as a reminder to the actors and producers. The selectors of the National Film Awards should also choose films that remove violence in their plots.
