The Indian National Congress has asked for it (page 1, “Sidhu quits Congress, Punjab crisis deepens”, 29 September). Navjot Singh Sidhu’s antics have only shown that the Gandhi brothers and sisters are naive and lack political acumen. The chances of the Congress party retaining power are now definitely over.

Mr. Sidhu has become a raging bull in Indian politics in a Chinese shop. The crisis in Punjab is an expression of personality-oriented politics promoted by the high command and where people are elected to key positions primarily on the basis of loyalty to the Gandhi family. Without an alternative ideology and inter-party democracy, the Congress party cannot remain relevant for long. Currently the party is in the grip of a death wish – to disappear.

Ms. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is, according to media reports, responsible for Mr. Sidhu’s uplift, is often referred to as the ‘Brahmastra’ of the Congress. If the Congress’s plight in Punjab is an indication, one wonders where it will take the party. The hype around him is inappropriate.

The report, “Chief Minister reviews the status of flood prevention plans” (Chennai, 29 September), is encouraging as there are days when the northeast monsoon causes a lot of grief to the city. We hope that with advance planning things will work out.
