prayagraj shooting

The double murder in Prayagraj has drawn two lines – condemnation by various opposition parties while the public at large seems less enthused to express disgust. While the rule of law is irreplaceable in a functioning democracy, it must also be remembered that ‘justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done’. If a criminal with around 100 cases has managed to flourish for decades and go relatively unscathed, it is an equally and more shameful failure of the rule of law. It is this failure of the law to bring the perpetrators to justice that fuels misplaced enthusiasm over extrajudicial killings (p. 1, April 17).

This shameless incident exposes the police system. As far as the officers are concerned, the matter is shameful and raises issues about police safety.

Pentagon Leak 2023

The Pentagon leaks are a sobering reminder to other countries about ensuring confidentiality and keeping top secret files secure. Surprisingly, no lessons have been learned even after WikiLeaks.

politics of milk

There is no doubt that Amul pioneered the concept of cooperative dairy farming because of Verghese Kurien’s vision. On the other hand, Nandini is a successful brand in Karnataka. Amul may be the ‘Taste of India’ but Nandini is the pride of Karnataka. In this I would like to cite the example of Karnataka’s banking sector, which has resulted in some of the best performing banks. With mergers and consolidations, their identity has been lost. One hopes that Nandini and Amul continue to go their separate ways.

It would be unfortunate that cooperative politics should result in a well-known dairy cooperative becoming a political weapon – it would do irreparable damage to the legacy of Verghese Kurien and Operation Flood.
