student Life
The article on saving the lives of young Indians in crisis on campuses was food for thought (editorial page, April 18). The fact is that academic results play an important role in a student’s life today, starting with the race to get a seat in a good institute. This is where the pressure starts. In fact the pressure starts at school too. There is a need for a change in the society where everything is not linked to academics and results.

party hopping
Defection by our leaders has become child’s play. How can a political leader leave his party for trivial reasons? What happens to the ideologies of the party to which they belonged till now? When will voters ‘recognise’ chameleon-like leaders and reject them?

in the courtroom
One does not need to be a staunch conservative to oppose same-sex marriage. It should be left to the choice of the person concerned. When such a matter is not part of the central platoon of Indian constitutional law, why is it given such priority? Especially when there are so many cases pending on the desk of the Supreme Court of India like Article 370, Electoral Bonds and Sedition?

The universally accepted basic feature of marriage is the union of people of the opposite sex. It is strongly felt that the apex court should leave the matter to the Parliament to decide after a detailed discussion on the subject.

While religious organizations claim marriage is a “sacred union” and the executive suggests it is a matter best handled by the legislature, there are LGBTQIA+ organizations demanding equal rights. Compromise and tolerance can be the best option in such a tussle.
