crisis in sri lanka

With popular protests against Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his family gathering steam in Sri Lanka as a result of its spectacular economic mismanagement, Vivek suggests he should step down. The opposition has made it clear that it will not cooperate. Instead of striving to remain in power, the Rajapaksas need to acknowledge the deep resentment they have against themselves, move forward and create a conducive environment to address the economic woes in a practical way.

Before the anger subsides, an ugly turn takes place, with Rajapaksa making way for an alternative political order. Obviously, the country hopes that the political leadership will move forward on this occasion. Perhaps the Leader of the Opposition should take the initiative to form an interim government, obtain the best available economic expertise and draw up a plan of action. The new leader should not hesitate to seek help from friendly neighbors. People should be asked to be ready to face some tough decisions.

Since defaulting on international loan repayments would be detrimental, Colombo should negotiate to convert these loans into long-term loans with some moratorium on repayment. But the most important task for such a leader is to take with him people of all classes from north to south.

Kashmir harmony

People coming to the aid of their neighbors in distress isn’t really news, but it’s not when it’s about Jammu and Kashmir, which has been given an atmosphere of mistrust there (“Muslims come to the aid of fearful Pandits “, 6 April).

The report reinforces the fact that there is hope in today’s changing India.

text in textbook

It is a shame that even though the practice of dowry is banned under the law, its ‘advantages’ and ‘advantages’ are being assessed, this time as a lesson in a textbook for nursing students. In (Inside pages, “Nursing Council condemns the text of dowry”, 6 April). It is imperative that strict action is taken by the government.
