Explainer, “How is hallmarking being implemented?” (‘FAQ’ page, December 5), was timely. Most of the members of the public are completely unaware of this subject. Just a few days back I bought a pair of gold bangles from a well known jeweler in Bangalore. I asked for ‘hall marking’ on the bangles which the employees claimed were inscribed. I was given a large magnifying glass and told to look for it at the designated spot. I couldn’t tell anything clearly. It was probably too short, probably not readable, whatever it was. But the obvious result was that I, the customer, could have no idea of its reality. A customer needs to make this very clear. Without giving any thought to it, ‘Hallmarking’ will end up like the invisible “FSSAI” mark that you find on all packaged foods.
