Letter to the Editor – October 22, 2021

It is a great and remarkable achievement that India has crossed the one billion mark as far as the dosage of COVID-19 vaccine is concerned. This virus has caused deep damage in almost every field. It is a feather in the cap of the Government of India, scientists, health workers and citizens of India in this exercise of equitable vaccine distribution.

Since October 3, 2021, the day the Lakhimpur Kheri incident took place, pro-government and anti-government groups and the media have become hyperactive – one trying to downplay the incident and the other trying to draw political blood. Who succeeded is a million dollar question right now, but as the matter becomes under consideration Further assertiveness may attract contempt of court provisions. However, the observation of the Supreme Court of the country that the Uttar Pradesh government is dragging its feet on the issue is not wrong if one can understand the sequence of events (page 1, October 21). The alleged involvement of a Union minister’s son has become the root of all this. Wonder why the concerned Union Minister did not tender his resignation. As they say, truth must prevail.

India’s decision to provide humanitarian aid to people in war-ravaged Afghanistan is timely, urgent and commendable (p. 1, October 21).

Humanity decides it is unwise to link the horrific background of the Taliban and humanitarian aid to war-torn people. In fact, India’s aid should go beyond food-related essentials, in particular, in the areas of infrastructure development, health care and social and economic empowerment of the Afghan people.
