It’s no secret that Lexus’ parent, Toyota, has been a big proponent of hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles. And as its luxury brand, it has now unveiled a UTV concept that is powered by a hydrogen-powered combustion engine. It is called a recreational off-highway vehicle which is basically an off-roader that burns hydrogen instead of petrol or diesel. It hasn’t shown much but borrows some styling elements from Lexus’ cars and SUVs with the spindle grille up front.

In addition to fuel cells, there may be hydrogen-based combustion engines that have not seen much traction. Lexus demonstrated a race car with a hydrogen fuel-inline 3-cylinder engine, which also competed in a Japanese endurance race. This is again not a new idea as in 2006 BMW showed off a 7-series sedan with a hydrogen V12 engine, with major revisions made to the V12 from fuel storage and injectors incorporated from petrol to hydrogen.

The vehicle uses hydrogen as fuel but also has a combustion engine.

Hydrogen combustion engines have some notable issues. Burning hydrogen in a combustion process results in toxic nitrogen oxide emissions and the process of creating and distributing hydrogen and then transferring the energy to the car is very inefficient. So, it pollutes and mileage is not very good.

This is why Toyota has also focused mostly on fuel cell-based hydrogen vehicles that are powered by electric motors – as in the case of the Mirai. But the major challenge with hydrogen is the lack of infrastructure to mass-produce it for transportation, and a general lack of fuel stations. Hydrogen production can also result in the production of a lot of greenhouse gas.
