Little Known Winter Getaways Around Visakhapatnam

From cascading waterfalls nestled in the lush green valleys of the Eastern Ghats to the region’s little-known peaks, here’s a list of places to visit in Visakhapatnam on a winter weekend

There are some wonders hidden among the Eastern Ghats bordering Visakhapatnam. According to regular trekkers, there are around 20 waterfalls and stunning peaks around the region. Here is a list of some of the places which are relatively easy to reach and are a perfect place for winters.

Kudiya Falls

Ever wanted to check out a pristine natural destination in the Eastern Ghats belt? There is a waterfall here that you hear before you see it.

The Kudiya Falls near Paderu has a three-tiered waterfall and is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the region. The first level of the waterfall is 50 feet high while the second level is 80 and the third level is 90. “It is safe to reach the second level and since it has a natural pool, it also makes it easy to reach this place,” says Naveen Rongali, founder of Ecohikes, a trekking group that conducts sustainable treks and excursions.

Away from the throngs of tourists, this waterfall offers serenity as well as some spectacular views to capture on camera. A 650 meters downhill trek from the parking area leads to this waterfall.

Buddigaruvu Falls

It is a smaller version of Kudiya and is about three kilometers away from it. There are two ways to reach here. The shorter route is via Devarapalli which is about 90 kms journey from Visakhapatnam. However, bad roads and poor mobile network are the major constraints. Naveen, who has been organizing treks in the region for the past three years, says, “There is no network beyond Devarapalli, which makes locating the waterfall very difficult, unless one is familiar with the area traveling with you “

The best way to reach the spot is via Paderu via Hukumpet (150 kms from Visakhapatnam).

Near these two waterfalls is the Tankotamma Falls, which is about 100 feet high. “It is relatively popular and you might find some crowds here during weekends,” says Naveen, “These three waterfalls have different characteristics and can be covered in a day.

Located at a distance of 25 kms from Paderu (135 kms from Visakhapatnam), Aradakota Falls has attracted the attention of nature lovers and photography enthusiasts for its scenic settings. It is a 70 feet high waterfall which is surrounded by lush greenery.

“We discovered this waterfall with the help of local villagers, who guided us. The journey to the waterfall is equally captivating. The route passes through lush green fields, small water bodies and rocky climbs,” says Samaveda Vegi, co-founder of Visakhapatnam-based travel and trekking group Treksum. It is ideal for a day trip. “You can reach the base by vehicle followed by a short walk up to the waterfall. The trek is not very difficult,” says Samved.

Termed as the highest peak of the Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh, the Jindagada – Aramakonda peaks are located in the same mountain range with an altitude difference of 20 meters. Jindagada is situated at an altitude of about 5,540 feet above sea level, which is slightly higher than Armakonda. “The peaks offer a spectacular 360-degree view of the Eastern Ghats. It will literally take you above the misty cotton clouds, offering both sunrise and sunset views,” says Naveen. About a year ago, the route to the peaks From Olubidda village of Hukumpet mandal it was a nine kilometer uphill trek.

“During the pandemic lockdown a three-metre wide road was laid, which has made the route better. Now it takes two hours to reach the peak,” says Naveen.

Photographer and dentist Suresh Gorantla, who trekked to the peak a while back, describes the experience as “soul cleansing”. “The summit is secluded and the experience of watching the sunrise from the highest point of the mountain is simply magical. On the way you pass small waterfalls and cascades, making it a very refreshing experience,” he says.

EcoHikes organizes camps near the peaks site in the village of Olubidda, where the Dongria Kondh tribes live. “Our main objective is to highlight the culture of the region and help people understand how our tribes are living with deep reverence and respect for nature,” explains Naveen.
