Liverpool Take Premier League Title Race Down To The Wire With Win In Southampton

Jurgen Klopp described Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League as “unlikely but possible” after taking the under-strength quadruple chaser’s title race to the final day of the season with a 2-1 win against Southampton on Tuesday.

After Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties in a gruesome FA Cup final only three days earlier, Klopp took a gamble with nine changes at St.

Despite effectively fielding a reserve team and falling behind Nathan Redmond’s opening strike, Liverpool bounced back with goals from Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip.

The Reds are just one point behind leaders Manchester City, with both teams with one game left.

A title race for the ages will be on City’s way if they win against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Klopp insisted over the weekend that he does not expect City to drop points against Villa.

But Liverpool will be crowned champions for the second time in three seasons if they beat Wolves at Anfield and City fail to win.

“Of course this is unlikely as City play at home against Aston Villa, who only play on Thursday. It is possible, not likely but possible. That’s enough,” Klopp said.

“This is our last home game of the season, the atmosphere will be great and we will try to use it.

“Of course it can happen. Football is a difficult game sometimes. Tonight was the only chance we had to win. We did our job. We never give up.”

Klopp will be expected to do his part of the equation against Wolves, especially now that their fresh key players can return to the squad.

Sadio Mane, Luis Diaz, Andrew Robertson, Thiago Alcantara and Trent Alexander-Arnold were dropped against Southampton, while Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk were sidelined with injuries sustained at Wembley.

“I’ve never had a group like this. They constantly push each other. In the end, it’s absolutely excellent and tonight is really special,” Klopp said.

“We would have had more problems today if we had played with people who played 120 minutes on Saturday.

“If it didn’t work, it would have been 100 percent my responsibility. Now it’s done and the boys should be really proud of it.”

City boss Pep Guardiola said he planned to watch the game on television and if he had tuned in, it would have made for a disappointing viewing as Southampton lost the lead.

But Riyad Mahrez’s missed penalty in the final minutes of City’s 2-2 draw at West Ham on Sunday gave Liverpool new hope of catching up to the leaders.

And the Reds, hoping to become the first English club to win all four major trophies in a season, will set their bid for history in the final two games of their incredible, marathon campaign.

At first, Liverpool will look to avoid a repeat of 2019, when they beat Wolves on the last day, but were nonetheless drawn to the title by City.

They will then travel to Paris to face Real Madrid in the Champions League final on 28 May.

After 13 minutes, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team took the lead and Liverpool came to the break.

Redmond slammed down the left edge, cut inside the edge of the field and delivered a fierce strike that took a deflection from James Milner as it shone into the far corner.

With the title hopeful, Liverpool showed desire and character which prompted Klopp to label him a “psychic monster”.

Japan forward Minamino made a rare Premier League debut with a brilliant equalizer in the 27th minute.

Joe Gomez fizzed a pass into Jota and his fully-weighted take-off reached Minamino, who beat Alex McCarthy to the near post with a ferocious rising drive.

Liverpool’s relentless pressure paid off in the 67th minute.

Matip and Kyle Walker-Peters challenged for Simikas’ corner and the ball hit McCarthy, forcing City to put Champagne on the ice.
