Locals revisit the 2001 robbery at Gunpoint. Kolkata News – Times of India

Kolkata: Two murders and dacoities in Bhawanipur on Monday night reminded the locals of yet another crime in the neighborhood two decades ago. On 23 March 2001, jewelery and cash were robbed at gunpoint by an elderly couple who lived barely 200 meters from the crime scene on Monday.
Though the robbers were outsiders, an investigation revealed the involvement of his 21-year-old granddaughter Sanjukta Basu Roy, The daughter of a bank officer, who aided and abetted the crime to meet her lifestyle needs, was convicted on the testimony of her 82-year-old grandfather Kalyan Ghosh Dastidar along with the testimony of 25 other witnesses. Sanjukta’s lover Sheikh Mokhtar and three others – Sadaqat Hussain, Mohammad Naseem and Niazuddin Ahmed – Convicted.
On the day of the crime, Sanjukta was on her way to visit her grandparents at their 67, Harish Mukherjee Road residence. At around 3 pm, when she went to ring the doorbell, she was taken prisoner by Mokhtar, who had a gun to his head. There were three others with him. She was ‘kidnapped’ after the robbery, but returned two days later claiming she was taken to Diamond Harbor, from where she fled. During interrogation, the police found flaws in his statement. He later confessed to his crime and helped the police nab Mokhtar.
