harini Logan The champions were declared after beating 234 children from the US and abroad, who had won local competitions, and received a prize package of $52,500.
was the runner-up Vikram Rajuwho gets $25.00, and Vihaan Sibali Came third, winning $15,000.
Of the 14 finalists who survived the three-day grueling contests in Washington, 11 were of Indian origin.
Logan, who is 14 years old, is a Class 8 student at a Montessori school in Austin, Texas.
The competition, dominated by children of Indian origin, tests not only memorization of spelling but also the knowledge of the origin of words and their structure and usage.
Ever since Balu Natarajan won it in 1985, 20 Indian-origin children have won it.
They monopolized it from 2008 to 2018, but a non-Indian girl was among the eight co-winners in 2019. The other seven were of Indian origin.
There were no contests in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic and an African-American girl won when it resumed last year.
In the final elimination round this year, the children chose the correct meaning of the words from a list of options instead of just spelling the words.
Logan was initially dropped in this round, but was reinstated when the judges ruled that his answer was also correct.
He and Raju feuded for several rounds in which both of them either misspelled words or got them corrected.
To break the deadlock they went into a “spelling-off” in which they had to spell correctly as many words as possible within 90 seconds.
Logan defeated Raju by correctly spelling 21 of his 15 words. The Spelling Bee, held since 1925, is sponsored by EWScripts Media Company.
