look | India’s first pod hotel

The recently inaugurated ‘Pod Hotel’ at Mumbai Central Railway Station is first of its kind in India.

It was introduced by the Indian Railways as a cheap option for travelers to stay.

The ‘pod’ or ‘capsule hotel’, was first developed in Japan. It has a large number of small, bed-sized rooms called capsules.

These hotels offer affordable, basic, overnight accommodations for guests who don’t need or can’t afford the larger, more expensive rooms offered by traditional hotels.

This hotel at Mumbai Central Railway Station is spread over 3000 square feet and has 48 pods to offer. This includes classic pods, private pods and separate pods for women and differently-abled.

Each pod room will provide free Wi-Fi, toiletries and luggage storage. Shower room and wash room will be provided in the common area.

Inside the pod, guests can take advantage of amenities such as a TV, a small locker, a mirror, an adjustable air conditioner, and air filter vents and reading lights.

This is in addition to interior lighting, mobile charging, smoke detectors and ‘do not disturb’ indicators.

IRCTC said tariffs may vary, from ₹999 per person for 12 hours to ₹1,999 per person for 24 hours, depending on the requirements.
