Losing their jobs due to the pandemic, six friends from Tiruvallur now run a successful food truck

Today, a year later, the food truck named ‘Thaiin Kudu Jigiri Dost’ is doing quite well, no one regrets the decision.

Last March, like thousands of others, when 34-year-old Charles Edward Xavier, an IT professional at a major firm, lost his job, he felt crushed and lost. Around the same time, his childhood friend Dinesh Kumar, who worked as a human resources professional at a leading five-star hotel in the city, also lost his job.

“Our minds seemed to be filled with uncertainty, and we did not know the way forward. That’s when the six of us, who didn’t have jobs, decided to turn one of our casual discussions about running a restaurant into a reality. Thereafter, I used a part of my savings and bought a vehicle, customized it and got the necessary permissions, and by October, we had started a food truck in Tiruvallur,” says Mr. Dinesh.

Today, a year later, the food truck named ‘Thaiin Kudu Jigiri Dost’ is doing quite well, no one regrets the decision. In a few weeks, they plan to put another truck on the road.

“Initially, it seemed daunting. Working in an air-conditioned room, it was difficult to stand under a tin roof in the scorching heat. I too am earning only half of what I used to earn. Still, I continued to do so. Because working with friends is extremely satisfying. From ₹5 to ₹50, anyone can buy our food. A portion of our earnings go to an old age home run by Mr. Dinesh. It sounds satisfying in more ways than one It is,” says Mr. Xavier.

They also offer a 10% discount for all drivers, provided they can present an identity card.
