Lucknow University professor Ravikant Chandan had allegedly made derogatory remarks against the Kashi Vishwanath temple and Hindu saints during a debate. An FIR was lodged on May 10 against the professor of the Hindi department of the university. Now, a student has allegedly assaulted a professor on the campus for his remarks on Wednesday, days after the FIR was registered, news agency ANI reported.
Kartik Pandey, a postgraduate Sanskrit student, has been arrested for assaulting a professor. The Lucknow University administration has suspended the student. It has also formed a committee to probe the matter. It claims that Pandey, who belongs to the Samajwadi Party, has been expelled from the party. He was a member of the Lucknow University unit of the SP Chhatra Sabha.
Earlier on Tuesday, May 17, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had staged a sit-in in Lucknow University against the professor. The next day the student assaulted him.
An FIR has been registered against the professor at Hasanganj police station for allegedly inciting religious sentiments and maligning the image of the university by spreading propaganda through social media. The FIR has been lodged by Aman Dubey, a resident of Lal Bahadur Shastri Hostel. He claimed that the professor has made derogatory remarks on Kashi Vishwanath temple and Hindu saints in a video on May 9.

The FIR was registered under sections 153-A, 504 and 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code and section 166 of the Information. technology (Amendment) Act. Dubey said in his FIR that the professor has hurt the religious sentiments of Hindu students. He also alleged that the professor had called the goons to attack the students’ protesters when he sought an explanation from the professor. Meanwhile, the university has sought a written reply from the professor and an explanation on the matter and a response to the complaints of the students.
