Suzuki Baleno which was tested by Latin NCAP came with two airbags as standard

The New Car Assessment Program for Latin America or Latin NCAP recently crash-tested the Suzuki Baleno, and the premium hatchback has received a disappointing zero-star rating from the safety watchdog. The biggest highlight here is that the Baleno sold in the Latin America region is manufactured in India at the Japanese carmaker’s Suzuki Motor Gujarat manufacturing facility, Ahmedabad. Incidentally, this is the second made-in-India Suzuki product to have received a zero rating from Latin NCAP in the last two months. Earlier in August, the Suzuki Swift also received a zero-star safety rating from Latin NCAP.

NS suzuki baleno The one that was crash tested came with two airbags as standard. However, it got a score of 20.03 percent for adult occupant protection and 17.06 percent for child occupant safety. That said, the car scored a good 64.06 percent for pedestrian protection and vulnerable road users, however, when it comes to safety assist features, the score drops to a disappointing 6.98 percent. However, we should mention that the Latin NCAP updated its testing policies earlier this year, which are now more stringent than those of the Global NCAP.

The zero stars result is explained by poor side impact protection, low whiplash scores and a lack of standard side head protection airbags.

The Baleno was tested for frontal impact and side-impact, whiplash and pedestrian safety. During the Frontal Impact Test, the car showed stable structure performance, however, the Side Impact Test showed the adult occupant’s chest having high intrusion into the door with poor protection. Whiplash testing showed marginal protection of the neck, but the main reason for the zero safety rating is poor side impact protection, and marginal whiplash protection. Latin NCAP says the lack of standard side body and head protection airbags, lack of standard electronic stability control (ESC) and Suzuki’s decision not to recommend a child restraint system (CRS) were also reasons for the car’s poor performance.

Latin NCAP Secretary General Alejandro Furas said, “The Baleno’s zero-star following the Swift’s zero-star rating a few weeks ago is part of the ongoing disappointment. Especially with the adult and child occupants on offer as standard from Suzuki. With poor security performance in protection. For Latin American consumers.” He has asked Suzuki to improve the standard safety equipment on the model at the earliest and test it to showcase the improvements. He adds, “Basic vehicle safety, which is taken lightly in mature markets, is a right that Latin American consumers should claim without paying extra for them”.

Latin NCAP reports that the Baleno 6 sold in Europe comes with airbags and ESC as standard, while the model in Latin America does not. At the same time, the safety watchdog also said that Suzuki has refused to test the optional equipment to show its performance, which may make them question the effectiveness of those additional safety elements.
