Madras High Court to hear on Sunday the petition to stay the election of AIADMK General Secretary

The Madras High Court on Saturday agreed to hold a special sitting on Sunday to hear the petition of expelled AIADMK leader P H Manoj Pandian. party notified elections to the post of General Secretary.

Justice K Kumaresh Babu will hear the matter in his chamber in the High Court. Mr Pandian’s counsel-on-record, S Elambaharti, had on Saturday sent an urgent email to the registrar (judicial) of the high court, seeking an urgent hearing against the election notification issued on Friday.

His plea was taken up for the notice of the judge, who agreed to hear the matter on Sunday after the counsel for the applicant served papers to the counsel for the AIADMK and its general council. At that time, senior advocate PS Raman, representing the applicants, had sought the liberty of the court to mention the matter for urgent hearing on issue of notification for election of party general secretary before April 11.

Within hours of his demand for freedom, the party issued a notification on Friday evening saying that nominations can be filed for the election to the post of general secretary from 10 am on Saturday, March 18 till 3 pm on Sunday, March 19. The nomination papers will be scrutinized on Monday, March 20, and they can be withdrawn till Tuesday, March 21, the notification said. The notification states that if there is a contest, the polling will be held on March 26 and the counting of votes will take place on March 27.
