Madrasas in Assam: The Assam government has asked all madrassas in the state to provide information about teachers employed by them by December 1 (Thursday), an official said today.

The madrassas came under government scrutiny after some teachers were arrested on charges of alleged terror links. The state administration even demolished three madrasas, while another similar institution was vandalized by the general public.

While the move drew criticism, the state government defended its action. The latest deadline was set during a meeting of Director General of Police (DGP), Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta on Wednesday (November 9).

A senior government official said madrasas have been directed to submit the details to the Directorate of Secondary Education. Notably, 47 people, including some madrasa teachers, have been arrested over the past six months for suspected terrorist links with the Al-Qaeda in India Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) module.
