UP State Madrasa Education Board Chairman Dr. Iftikhar Ahmed Javed has said that students of every religion have the right to get education in state madrasas.

He said, “Madrassas provide modern education in every subject along with religious education. If Muslims can get education in Sanskrit schools and colleges, why can’t students of other religions get education in Madrasas? I don’t think anyone should discriminate between students on the basis of religion. I have also been a student of Banaras Hindu University.”

The statement was in response to a notice by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). A letter signed by NCPCR Chairperson Priyank Kanungo called for a detailed investigation of all government funded/recognised madrassas admitting non-Muslim children. The questioning should include physical verification of the children.

After investigation, all such children should be admitted to schools for formal education. The letter also directed for mapping all unmapped madrassas in the State/UTs and admitting any/all children in schools to get formal education with immediate effect.

The letter has also sought the copy of Action Taken Report (ATR) within 30 days for record and further appropriate action. Dr Javed said: “Madrasas, as an invaluable means of traditional education, have played an important role in spreading literacy among the downtrodden sections of the society. Students can be of any religion. There are some madrassas in the state where Sanskrit and other languages are taught. Science, maths and other subjects are also being taught in madrassas.
