Maha politics: Ajit Pawar’s defection sparks buzz about changes in UP, Karnataka

Senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar joined the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government on Sunday, sparking buzz about similar revolts in other states. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale warned about the possibility of a ‘similar situation’ arising in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in the coming days. The claims also included the Opposition ranks with Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy voicing ‘fear’ about a rebellion within the newly formed Congress government in the state.

“A similar situation (like currently in Maharashtra) can arise in Bihar soon as some JD(U) MLAs are upset with Nitish Kumar. In UP, Jayant Chaudhary can join with NDA as is currently upset with Akhilesh Yadav. There is a possibility that differences arise between MLAs of the Samajwadi Party,” the Republican Party of India (Athawale) lawmaker told ANI on Monday.

He was echoed by SBSP founder OP Rajbhar who claimed that many leaders from the Samajwadi Party would soon defect to the BJP and then take oath as ministers.

“SP MPs are upset with Akhilesh Yadav. They can’t see their future in SP. The reason for SP leaders to leave the party is that Akhilesh Yadav is going to meet Telangana CM KCR but he does not meet Mayawati. BSP and Mayawati are the game changers in Uttar Pradesh,” he opined.

He also broached the possibility of an alliance with the BSP and Congress to form a ‘completely new front’ ahead of 2024 elections.

Meanwhile, several netizens claimed that Karnataka could see a rebellion led by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. While the assertions remain wholly unverified, claims about a Congress defection have continued to gain ground.

“After yesterday’s shocking development in Maharashtra, I am fearing who will emerge as the Ajit Pawar in Karnataka,” said JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy said.
