Maharashtra: Buyers will need a drinking permit to buy liquor from small retailers. Mumbai News – Times of India

Mumbai: Liberalization sale of liquor Allowing it to be sold from small retailers (with areas of 100 square meters and above) does not mean that the buyer does not need a drinking permit.
Excise officials said buyers who do not have a drinking permit will have to buy a daily permit of Rs 5 from the shop before taking them home. For consumers who have already obtained an annual or lifetime drinking permit from the Excise Department, shopping becomes as easy as ever. For this a daily permit has to be kept and issued by the shops to the buyers without any defaults while selling the bottles.
It may be mentioned that light beer is the only liquor that does not require a drinking permit and can be consumed by people 21 years of age and older. However, all other types of alcohol require a drinking permit which can be obtained by people aged 25 and over.
To provide a larger home market for wine growers and grape farmers, the state has allowed walk-in stores and supermarkets of over 100 square meters to sell stored wine on their shelves (with locking 2.5 cubic meters of store space). . To do this the shops need a liquor sales license costing Rs 5000 per year.
Till now, supermarkets with liquor licenses were allowed to sell liquor and beer in the state. However, these were to be displayed inside a separate enclosure. Many large supermarket chains have been selling wines this way for many years.
With the current decision, small shops will also be allowed to sell liquor. Liquor shops will have to be set up at some distance from educational and religious institutions. There are 70 wineries in the state and about 10,000 people are involved in the business.
