Maharashtra Cabinet approves purchase of 760 MW power to meet rising demand

The Maharashtra cabinet in a meeting today approved the State Electricity Distribution Utility for procurement of 760 MW of power to overcome the shortfall in supply due to rising demand for power.

Presently, Maharashtra is facing a power shortage of 3,000 to 4,000 MW. The state is on the verge of facing blackout or load shedding like some other states of India.

The state’s power demand rose by a record 8.2% over the previous year to 28,589 MW. Mumbai The registered demand of 3400 MW is expected to continue to increase in the state and even touch 30,000.

CMO Maharashtra said through its Twitter account that in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray on Friday, it was decided to approve the purchase of power by MSEDCL to avoid load shedding in view of the increasing demand of power in the state. Can go ,

State-owned power distribution company, Mahavitaran to purchase 760 MW from CGPL 5.50 to 5.70 per unit till June against the available electricity 12 per unit in the open market.

The power department has decided to purchase 760 MW of power from Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL) in view of the increasing demand for power in the state and the paucity of available power.

Raut also said that the state will buy electricity on the lines of the power distribution company. 100-150 crores from CGPL for the next two and a half months. In addition, Mahavitaran is allowed to explore other options for power purchase to meet the growing demand.

“In view of the power shortage and load shedding crisis in the state, the state cabinet today decided to give right to MSEDCL to buy power from private power companies,” Raut said.

Raut said 760 MW should be enough to meet the demand.
