Maharashtra government may take action against Parambir Singh: Report

After former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh According to sources, who appeared before the crime branch of Mumbai Police on Thursday, the Maharashtra government is contemplating taking action against him.

According to sources, the meeting is being chaired by Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil and also includes Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte, Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbhakoni, Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale.

Maharashtra government sources said, “Param Bir Singh, who was on leave, did not inform the Maharashtra government about his return to the state. The state government is contemplating taking action against him.”

The former Mumbai Police Commissioner today appeared before the Crime Branch of Mumbai Police in connection with an extortion case registered against him.

According to Singh’s lawyer, he has given statements before the crime branch.

“As ordered by the Supreme Court, he will continue to cooperate with the investigation,” his lawyer said.

Singh, who has been declared an ‘absconding’ by a Mumbai court, had reached the Crime Branch Unit 11 office in Kandivali to join the probe into the alleged Goregaon extortion case.

The former Mumbai Police Commissioner told the Supreme Court on Monday that he is very much in the country and is not absconding. The top court granted him interim protection from arrest and directed him to join the investigation.

Six cases of corruption and extortion were registered against Singh after he wrote a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray alleging corruption and misconduct against then Home Minister and senior NCP leader Anil Deshmukh.

Singh, a 1988-batch IPS officer, was removed from the post of police commissioner on March 17 and made the general commander of the Maharashtra State Home Guard after allegations were leveled against Deshmukh.
