Maharashtra is “relieved” now but…: Sharad Pawar on BS Koshyari’s exit

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar on Sunday said that Maharashtra is relieved with the exit of Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, but the Center should have taken this decision long ago.

He demanded an inquiry whether Mr. Koshyari had taken any unconstitutional decision.

A Rashtrapati Bhavan release said on Sunday that President Draupadi Murmu has accepted Mr Koshyari’s resignation.

Mr Koshyari was replaced by Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais.

Koshyari, 80, was accused by the opposition of playing into the hands of the BJP when he administered the oath of office to Devendra Fadnavis as chief minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar as deputy chief minister in the early hours of November 23. 2019, which ended the President’s Rule imposed after political parties failed to form a government following the assembly elections.

However, the Fadnavis-Ajit Pawar government lasted only three days.

While in opposition, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) used to visit the Governor’s office raising issues against the then Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

Mr Koshyari had asked the Maharashtra Legislature Secretary to conduct a floor test of the then Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government on June 30, 2022, in the wake of the rebellion by Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and 15 other MLAs.

However, Thackeray resigned as Chief Minister soon after the Supreme Court refused to stay Mr. Koshyari’s direction to hold a floor test in the Assembly.

After this, Eknath Shinde took oath as Chief Minister with the support of BJP.
