Maharashtra: Mega farmers march over price voice near Mumbai, CM Shinde likely to meet farmers

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis can meet the agitating farmers today at 3 pm. The massive march is likely to continue towards Mumbai until the two farmers meet.

On Wednesday, there was a round of talks between the agitating farmers and the two ministers, which according to sources was termed as “positive”. Over 10,000 farmers are expected to arrive in Mumbai in the next few days.

The protesters said that they would agitate outside the Vidhan Bhawan during the current budget session.

Thousands of farmers and tribals marching from northern Maharashtra’s Nashik district to Mumbai in support of their demands entered Thane district on Wednesday even as the state government deputed two ministers to hold talks with them.

As the ‘Long March’ entered Thane district, chief minister Eknath Shinde’s political constituency on the outskirts of Mumbai city, the government sent ministers Dada Bhuse and Atul Save to hold talks with the agitating farmers.

The march, organized by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), crossed Kasara town in Thane district adjoining Mumbai, said CPI(M) legislator Vinod Nikol.

Shahpur police in Thane district said the members of the morcha would stay at Kalamb village on Thursday before leaving for Mumbai.

State ministers Bhuse and Save said that discussions would be held with a delegation of agitating farmers to find a solution to their demands.

“If they do not agree (to any solution), they will be called to Mumbai on Thursday to hold discussions with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis,” he said.

The Maharashtra government on Monday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 300 per quintal to onion farmers who were badly affected by the sharp fall in onion prices.

Prices of kitchen staples have plummeted in Maharashtra, resulting in farmers getting little for their produce. Nashik district is a major center of onion cultivation in the country.
