A BJP MLC, Gopichand Padalkar put forward a demand to rename Ahmednagar to ‘Ahilyanagar’ after the prominent Maratha queen.

After Aurangabad and Osmanabad were officially renamed as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv, there is a growing demand to rename the city of Ahmednagar. BJP MLC, Gopichand Padalkar tweeted and thanked the chief minister and his deputy, and put forward a demand to rename Ahmednagar to ‘Ahilyanagar’ after the prominent Maratha queen.

“Thanks and congratulations to the Shinde-Fadnavis government for renaming Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad to Dharashiv. Similarly, Ahmednagar, the birthplace of Punyashlok Ahilya Devi, will be named ‘Ahilyanagar’ under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi government in its last cabinet meeting had approved the proposal to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad. Thereafter, the Eknath Shinde-led government first stayed all the decisions taken by the previous government and later passed the decision to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad. When the Uddhav Thackeray-led government took this decision in the last cabinet meeting, Congress leader and then minister Aslam Sheikh walked out as a mark of protest. Later, differences between Congress and Thackeray also increased regarding this decision.

Padalkar’s tweet has triggered a debate in the political circles of Maharashtra whether any city will be renamed.

Ahilyabai Holkar was born in Chondi village of Ahmednagar district. According to Padalkar, there has been a long-standing demand to rename the city after Ahilyabai and if it happens, it will be a true tribute to her.
