Mahua Moitra slams Decathlon for breach of privacy, calls Indian branch customers ‘fools’

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra targeted sports brand Decathlon for “privacy violations” just like her fiery speeches in Parliament and on Thursday tweeted about her experience shopping from its store in Delhi’s Ansal Plaza.

Moitra tweeted that when she went to the store with her father to buy a pair of trousers, the store insisted on giving her phone number and email address at the billing counter. Reluctant to give out his mobile number, the MP expressed his concern over the brand’s privacy policy and consumer laws in general.

“My dad wants to buy trousers for ₹1499 in cash on @Decathlon_India. Ansal Plaza and Manager insist that I need to enter my mobile number and email id to make purchase. @Decathlon_India You are violating privacy laws and consumer laws by emphasizing this. Currently at the store,” she tweeted at around 12:30 pm today.

She further tweeted, “I always buy stuff in UK from @DecathlonUK and they never ask for mobile number and only for email if someone wants a paperless receipt. So clearly only the Indian branch wants to fool the customers here. Not good @Decathlon_India”

Finally, the store manager made the purchase with his number.

Moitra told News18, “I buy from UK Decathlon. It’s not like I’m buying gold or making big purchases that I need to give my KYC… They have to answer why they are doing this. Huh.

As soon as the tweet containing her complaint went viral, some Twitter users supported her, while others felt that she was showing her trip to the UK. One of the Twitter users said, “How many Indians can afford to go shopping in the UK? How do most of our representatives travel abroad most of the time.”

Taking Moitra’s side, a user said, “Yes, it’s only in India, any global retail chain for that matter. It’s just harassment.” Another patted Moitra for raising the issue and said, “The good thing about Mahua Moitra paying cash in the Decathlon is a big pain… I felt the same way. Glad someone influential is raising this issue.” Hope they work on their billing system. Make it simple, less noisy and effective.”
