The trailer promises a big, action-packed film starring Arvind Swamy and Kunchako Boban in lead roles. Kunchako referred to it as the ‘biggest budget’ film he has been a part of so far. Arvind Swami who returns after Malayalam Devaragami (1996), plays Dawood, the mafia boss, and the film is about the relationship between the two characters and if they can trust each other. “The script and the basic idea – the bond between two men – is something we don’t see much in our cinema and that I liked. I wanted to explore the theme. Since it could be put anywhere, we I chose Mumbai-Mangaluru and places around these cities. I wanted to make this film on a large scale and decided to make it bilingual,” Fellini explains over the phone. The screenplay, written by Hemant Kumar, came through his editor Appu Bhattathiri.
The team felt that Arvind Swamy would be apt as Dawood, the boss of the underworld. In more than two meetings, the actor was on board. Fellini had wanted to work with Cunchaco for a long time, in fact, he even pitched thevandi For the actor who didn’t take it because of other commitments. “This role is different from his earlier role, he was a perfect fit too,” he added.
The film has been shot simultaneously in both the languages. He laughs at the meter difference when it comes to performances – understood for Malayalam and not so for Tamil. “Not really, it was about finding balance [of acting], We focused on the performance and stayed true to the script. He says that the more difficult task than filming in two languages was planning to shoot in different cities due to restrictions during the COVID-19 and pandemic.
The surprise package of the film is Jackie Shroff, who appears in a cameo. Fellini declined to explain what the role was. “We wanted a star like him and we managed to get the man ourselves.”
What does bringing two non-Malayalee actors on board reveal about the perception of films being made in Malayalam? “He has great respect for Malayalam cinema, which is regarded as the best in regional cinema. People now eagerly follow Malayalam movies, especially after the pandemic. We also have to take into account the fact that they may be listening to many other scripts/narratives in other languages. So, if they are interested in our projects, it means our films are interesting to them.”
