Malayalam lyricists demand higher pay and better recognition

In the meeting, it was concluded that even established lyricists struggle to get paid well.

A meeting organized by Malayalam lyricists assessed the status of lyricists in the film industry.

A group of Malayalam lyricists, who formed an organization called Rachna, recently held a meeting where they addressed the issues faced by them in the film industry. Their demands included better pay and recognition for songwriters in the industry. It was assessed in the meeting that the position of Malayalam lyricists is not good as compared to other language film industries.

The lyricists also discussed that even though Malayalam cinema has made progress in terms of presentation and sales, the lyricists are not getting adequate remuneration. Films are often noticed in the first stage through songs. The lines are good, but the pay is not worth it at all. In the meeting, it was also concluded that even established lyricists struggle to get paid well.

While uploading songs on YouTube, the names of music directors, singers, actresses and actors appear, but many people ignore the lyricists. The meeting assessed that this is the case with many streaming apps as well. It was demanded in the meeting that there should be positive action from the manufacturers in the matter of increasing the wages.

Talking about the organization, the members came together in the third year of implementing the idea of bringing songwriters, who were often separated, into a WhatsApp network. Earlier in the first week of June, 25 members of Rachna had gathered in Kochi. For some, the meeting was an opportunity to meet many people they knew only through words and lines.

Shibu Chakraborty, Chittoor Gopi, Anwar Ali, Rafiq Ahmed, Santosh Verma and Hari Etumanoor attended the meeting without any formal agenda. Sasikala, Fauzia, Mriduladevi, Dhanya Suresh Menon, Shaheera, Harita and other female presence in the composition also strengthened the group.
