Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu was forced to work harder by China’s He Bing Xiao before she emerged victorious in the opening round of the Malaysia Masters in Kuala Lumpur on 6 July.

Seventh seed Sindhu defeated Bing Xiao 21-13 17-21 21-15 to enter the second round.

Verma will face Li Shi Feng in the pre-quarterfinals.

However, the road came to an end for Sameer Verma, who went down 21-10, 12-21, 14-21 to fourth-seeded Chinese Taipei shuttler Chou Tien Chen.

Later in the day, the women’s doubles pair of HS Prannoy, Saina Nehwal and N Sikki Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa will be in action.
