Mallikarjun Kharge will take over as Congress President today

New Delhi [India]October 26 (ANI): The newly-elected President of Indian National Congress Mallikarjun Kharge will take charge of the post at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi on Wednesday.

All Congress Working Committee members, MPs, State Congress Committee Presidents, CLP leaders, former CMs, former state presidents and other AICC office-bearers are invited to the program.

Invitations have been sent to all the above stakeholders by KC Venugopal, General Secretary of the Organization.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said on Tuesday that he would also be presented at the event.

“Mallikarjun Kharge will take over as the national president of the Congress party. I have also been asked to be present on this occasion. So, I am going to Delhi,” he said in Raipur.

Kharge defeated his rival Shashi Tharoor by a huge margin in the race for the top post of the party, thus becoming the first non-Gandhi to hold the post after 24 years.

Kharge got 7,897 votes in the presidential election in the October 17 polls, while his rival Tharoor got 1,072 votes.

Soon after his electoral victory, Kharge said the party had set an example to “strengthen the country’s democracy by holding organizational elections” at a time when “democracy is in danger” in the country.

Addressing the media after his victory, Kharge said the Congress has “consistently strengthened democracy” and protected the Constitution in the country’s 75-year history.

“Now that democracy is in danger and the Constitution is under attack, and every institution is being destroyed, Congress has set an example to strengthen the country’s democracy by holding organizational elections at the national level. I thank everyone associated with the election,” he said.

He also congratulated Tharoor and said that he discussed ways to take the party forward. Tharoor had gone to Kharge’s residence to congratulate him on his victory.

I would also like to congratulate my colleague Shashi Tharoor. We were contesting the elections as representatives. He met me and we discussed how to take the party forward.

Besides this, Kharge will soon visit electoral states like Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat. (ANI)
