Mamata Banerjee inaugurates Christmas festival in Kolkata

A day earlier, the Chief Minister had tweeted and congratulated the people of Goa on the State Liberation Day.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday inaugurated the Christmas celebrations at Park Street in Kolkata but did not miss the opportunity to talk about her recent trip to Goa.

Referring to his visit to the Basilica of Bom Jesus, where the relics of St. Francis Xavier are preserved, the Chief Minister said, “I was telling the Archbishop. [Archbishop of Kolkata]I have seen St. Xavier’s monument touching the wall. I saw it for the first time and I was amazed. I am very proud that I got the chance to be here…”

A day earlier, the Chief Minister had congratulated the people of Goa on the State Liberation Day by tweeting. “Greetings to all my Goa brothers and sisters on 60th #GoaLiberationDay. I salute the supreme sacrifice of all our freedom fighters. On this momentous occasion, let us resolve to usher in a new dawn for our beautiful state and honor their sacrifices,” Ms Banerjee had tweeted. She is using social media to reach out to the people of Goa and make election promises like the Gruha Lakshmi card, which promises to give Rs 5,000 to the women of every household in Goa.

The Trinamool Congress president had visited the western coastal state twice in the past few months and held public meetings keeping in mind the state elections in early 2022. Several leaders, including Congress MLAs, have joined the Trinamool Congress. Christians constitute about 25 per cent of the population in Goa.

Ms Banerjee stressed the need to unite while talking about the prevailing “political pollution” and wished that God “give strength to fight the battle for the country”.

“We love all religions and castes,” Ms Banerjee said.
