Mamata Banerjee reshuffles Bengal cabinet; Former BJP MP Babul Supriyo gets berth; 8 new ministers joined the team

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee On Wednesday, he reshuffled his cabinet by inducting eight new ministers, including former BJP MP Babul Supriyo. The cabinet reshuffle took place after the arrest of former minister and Mamata’s trusted aide Partha Chatterjee in the infamous teacher recruitment scam case.

New ministers took oath, while tribal minister Birbaha Hansda took the new oath after becoming a minister with independent charge. Supriyo, Snehasis Chakraborty, Partha Bhowmik, Udayan Guha and Pradip Majumdar were ministers in charge; Hansda and Roychowdhury as ministers with independent charge; and Tajmul Hussain and Satyajit Burman as Ministers of State.

After Chatterjee stepped down as cabinet minister, there was great interest in allocating his portfolios. According to the notification issued by the state government, Supriyo has been given the charge of tourism department along with information technology. The IT department was earlier with the tainted Chatterjee.

Supriyo said, “I thank Mamata didi. She has inspired me. TMC has accepted me. I am very much in charge now. Whatever the CM tells me, he will do everything.” ANI, As a BJP leader, Surpio was a bitter critic of the Mamata Banerjee-led state government, and was often known for court controversies through his statements against the ruling party.

Dr Shashi Panja, who was holding the charge of the Department of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, has also got the additional charge of two departments previously held by Chatterjee: Industry, Commerce and Enterprise as well as Public Enterprises and Industrial Reconstruction.

Minister-in-Charge Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay has also been given additional charge of Parliamentary Affairs, which was earlier another department held by Chatterjee.

The new in-charge minister Snehasish Chakraborty has been given the transport portfolio, which was earlier with Firhad Hakim. Tribal face Hansda has been given independent charge of self-help group and self-employment department.

Partha Bhowmik is the Minister in charge of Irrigation and Waterways Department; Udayan Guha in charge of North Bengal Development Department; Pradeep Majumdar is the minister in charge of the Panchayat and Rural Development Department; Biplab Roy Chowdhury holds the independent charge of the Department of Fisheries; Tajmul Hussain has been allotted Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Textiles Department, while Satyajit Burman has been given School Education Department.

The facelift cabinet reflects a “composite Bengal” with an emphasis on tribal identity and North Bengal. Sources said the chief minister would also adopt a new working mode with the state government and the Trinamool Congress splitting up.

The cave of Cooch Behar is an important inclusion of North Bengal. TMC did not perform well in Cooch Behar during the 2021 assembly elections.

However, with these additions, Chief Minister Chatterjee wants to make a fresh start with an administration with a “clean image” after being hit by a furore. He promised speedy action in corruption-related cases, and a cabinet reshuffle to remove his harshest critics is an early example.

Party insiders said the ministers who would be dropped would be given more responsibility in the TMC organisation. Mamta had said on Monday, “Some new faces will come because Subrata Mukherjee has died, Sadhan Pandey has also passed away and Partha Chatterjee is behind bars.” So it is not possible for me to take care of everything. Some new faces will come and some leaders will work in the party.

TMC has decided that different people in the party and the government will have responsibilities. The CM has decided that with the Panchayat elections to be held next year, the cabinet should look like a pan-Bengal.
