Mamata calls Bengal Business Summit a ‘runaway success’, opposition reminds CM of old promises

The 6th edition of Bengal Global Business Summit, 2022 received investment proposals worth Rs 3.42 lakh crore in just two days creating around 40 lakh new jobs in the state.

So Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed during the concluding session of the summit amid grave doubts not only on the current figures but also on the status of implementation of proposals received during the last five editions of the summit, which the government As per the claims of Rs.12 lakh crores, has exceeded Rs.

Till the time this report was filed, the Bengal government did not provide the investment figures and sector-wise break-up details it received in the last 48 hours.

Without naming it, Banerjee’s pitch for the summit’s “runaway success” was her belief in “unity of the people”, making a direct reference to the controversial demolition drive in the aftermath of the riots in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area. “We don’t want to be bulldozed. We don’t want to divide people, unite people. Unity is our greatest strength. Culturally, if you are united you will be very healthy. But if you are divided, so be it.” You will fall,” she said in her closing speech.

Banerjee said the proposals came from 137 MoUs, Letters of Intent and Expression of Interest for investments signed and exchanged during the two-day summit, which was attended by around 4,300 delegates from 42 countries, including 500. More foreign participants were involved.

Banerjee left no ambiguity in claiming a leadership position in running the risk of holding a business summit amid Covid-19 concerns, the first of such state summit held since the pandemic-triggered shutdown in the country. Was.

“My colleagues in the government were skeptical of the possibility of having such a global level meeting when I proposed the idea amid the pandemic. But I insisted on doing so to instil confidence among investors. I said, even if a lot of countries don’t respond, it will still suffice. The disease will come and go but it cannot be allowed to rule our lives,” Banerjee said.

He reiterated his main objective of industrializing the state and creating new jobs during his current tenure, saying, “Now that Bengal has shown the way, others will follow.”

However, Banerjee’s claims were strongly opposed by her political opposition in the state as BJP leader Dilip Ghosh said: “We hear these investment promises every year. Signed MoUs never convert into actual investment. There is also no direct flight from Kolkata to London. She suppresses the fact that 45 lakh migrant workers from Bengal are working here in other states due to lack of job opportunities. ,

CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty said: “Before claiming success for this edition of the summit, the chief minister should publicly state the status of the Rs 12 lakh crore proposals which he claimed during the previous summit. This is all a sham of public money.”

Unfazed by the criticism, Banerjee announced that the seventh edition of the summit would have an extra day than the first and be held only next year – from February 1-3, 2023 – cutting the gap in his traditional two years.

“It is better to start preparations from this day,” Banerjee told her bureaucrats in the government.
