West Bengal CM leaves for Delhi, will meet protesting TMC MPs to increase solidarity

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday left for a four-day tour of the national capital amid rising political tension in Tripura and protests by Trinamool Congress MPs outside the Home Ministry office in Delhi.

This is the Trinamool President’s second visit to Delhi after the West Bengal Assembly elections in which his party registered a thumping victory over the Bharatiya Janata Party.

She is also likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.

“BSF is not my enemy. But BJP thinks that BSF is BJP. Law and order is a state subject and apart from the state police, there are a lot of agencies and all have their own jurisdiction.

Recent notification of Union Home Ministry Extension of jurisdiction of BSF The range from 15 km to 50 km has become a flashpoint between the Center and the state government. The Trinamool government passed a resolution in the Assembly urging the Center to withdraw the notification.

Another issue Ms Banerjee may discuss is the state’s pending funds with the Centre. The chief minister has accused the Center of not providing adequate funds to the state, especially when West Bengal was ravaged by natural calamities like cyclones and floods.

He said even media persons are not allowed to work freely in Tripura.

Ms Banerjee’s visit comes ahead of the winter session of Parliament and is expected to meet leaders of opposition parties. After their first visit in the last week of July, TMC has made inroads in Tripura and Goa.

Was a highlight of the trip in July Congress President Sonia Gandhi met, In the past few months, several Congress leaders including former Mahila Morcha president Sushmita Dev and former Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro have joined the TMC. It will be interesting to see whether the Congress leadership will reach out to Ms. Banerjee or will she reach out to senior Congress leaders.

The visit is taking place a few days after the Prime Minister announced repeal of three agricultural laws, Ms Banerjee had extended support to the protesting farmers and sent several delegations of party MPs to meet the farmers. The TMC president, who came to power in West Bengal, may also meet some leaders of the farmers’ movement on the issue of farmers opposing forced land acquisition.

Moreover, two visits to the national capital in less than six months also point to the growing ambitions of the TMC as it seeks to project itself as a pan-India party.
