At a time when politics is boiling over the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment scam in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday left for Delhi to attend the NITI Aayog meeting to be held later this week. The visit comes at a time when central investigative agencies have intensified their probe into various scams in the state.

The Enforcement Directorate, which is probing the SSC recruitment scam, on Thursday conducted raids at various places in Kolkata and adjoining suburbs. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also conducted raids in the state in connection with the coal theft scam.

meeting on friday

Ms Banerjee is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. A section of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders of West Bengal did not want the meeting between the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister to take place at a time when the Trinamool Congress government is facing the heat of the SSC recruitment scam. Following the seizure of ₹50 crore cash in the recruitment scam, the chief minister had to sack former minister Partha Chatterjee, and reshuffle the state cabinet by inducting eight new faces.

In West Bengal, the Left parties and the Congress leadership have raised questions on the Chief Minister’s visit to Delhi.

tacit understanding

“Travel has nothing to do with policy (commission), it is” strategy (Corruption)’. Mamata Banerjee’s visit is clearly an attempt to create a tacit understanding, so that people close to her can be spared by the investigating agencies,” Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sujan Chakraborty said.

During her four-day visit to Delhi, Ms Banerjee is expected to meet leaders of opposition parties and also meet President Draupadi Murmu. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership said there was nothing wrong in the Chief Minister’s meeting with the Prime Minister. Spokesperson of the Chief Minister, Shri Kunal Ghosh is likely to take up the issue of pending dues of the state with the Prime Minister.
