According to police, the incident came to light around 3.20 am on Friday, when a watchman of a cardboard company on Khairani Road in Saki Naka called up the police control room and informed that a woman was assaulted by a man inside a tempo nearby. is going. factory.

“Saki Naka police station personnel reached the spot within ten minutes and traced the victim. She had sustained serious injuries and was lying in the rear of the tempo. They took the keys of the tempo and went straight to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, where the victim was admitted in an unconscious state. Treatment was started immediately,” Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale told reporters.

Questioning the law and order situation in the state, a political storm has erupted with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding the execution of the guilty person.

Mr Nagrale said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jyotsna Rasam has been appointed as the investigating officer. “The investigation will be completed within a month and charge sheet will be filed against the accused,” he said.

According to officials working on the case, Chauhan is alleged to have dragged the victim to the back of the tempo and brutally thrashed her with an iron rod, causing serious injuries to her torso as well as her private parts. The victim died on Saturday morning. The police later added the murder section to the FIR under the Indian Penal Code. The statement of the victim could not be recorded before she died.

Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had announced that the matter would be heard in a fast track court. “The heinous crime that took place at Saki Naka is an insult to humanity. The case will be heard expeditiously and the guilty will be given the harshest punishment while ensuring justice to the woman who lost her life due to this horrific crime. The authorities are directed to expedite the investigation,” Mr Thackeray said in a statement. Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse-Patil said he was personally supervising the investigation and the culprits would not be spared.

Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Devendra Fadnavis described the crime as a blot on Mumbai, which is considered a safe city for women. “The court will pronounce the verdict, but we feel that the culprits should be hanged,” he said. The National Commission for Women (NCW) has asked the Mumbai Police to arrest all the accused in the case. Shri Nagrale said that only Chouhan was responsible.
