new Delhi:

A 35-year-old Protective Services Officer (PSO) of a businessman was arrested for allegedly stealing Rs 20 lakh and an SUV belonging to his employer in North Delhi’s Shastri Nagar area.

The accused has been identified as Nikhil Goswami, a resident of Raj Nagar, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

On 15 February, Manoj Jain informed the police that his PSO Goswami had eloped with his Rs 20 lakh cash and SUV from near Shastri Nagar metro station.

Mr Jain’s driver Vipin Kumar told the police that his employer had asked him to go to Pitampura to collect Rs 20 lakh from a man along with Mr Goswami.

According to Mr. Kumar, Goswami was driving the car while returning. When they reached near Shastri Nagar metro station, Mr. Kumar asked them to stop the car so that he could relieve himself.

A senior police officer quoted Kumar as saying that as soon as he got down from the car, Goswami left the vehicle.

After investigation, the police reached a house in Raj Nagar, Ghaziabad, where they found the SUV. However, the flat was locked from outside, the official said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said police continued surveillance for a few days and caught him on Sunday.

He said that apart from the SUV, they also recovered Rs 17.6 lakh out of the amount stolen from the accused.

Goswami, who has a B.Tech in mechanical engineering, was living with a woman after a strained relationship with his wife.

The DCP said he started working as Jain’s PSO last year as he had a revolver’s license.

Goswami was in debt and in need of money. After absconding with the cash, he along with his girlfriend, his sister and brother-in-law went to Manali, police said.

He booked two suites in Manali for Rs 25,000 per day and stayed there for a few days. For the next three days he was living in a rented house. Police said that he had also bought two mobile phones in Manali.

He said that on Sunday he reached Raj Nagar flat to collect his luggage and SUV and was arrested.
