Man furious over Natu Natu performance at Oscars without Indian dancers

American dancers perform on the Academy Awards stage for Oscar winner Natu Natu.

Singer Rahul Sipligunj and Kaal Bhairav’s Natu Natu performance at the 95th Academy Awards did not include any Indian-origin dancers.

RRR’s Natu Natu won the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards. But the icing on the cake was the live performance for the track, performed by Bollywood Superstar Deepika Padukone. However, the televised performance of the song has been receiving criticism from a section of internet users for not featuring any dancer of Indian origin on stage. The live dance performance was headlined by Natu Natu singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaal Bhairav. However, the rest of the cast on stage were American. Like many, an Instagram user named Taha has taken out his anger over the absence of Indian-origin dancers during the Natu Natu act Oscars 2023. In an Instagram Reels, Taha has slammed the organizers of the Academy Awards for the same. He can be heard saying, “I love that my country is like a fantasy place where people can cosplay because not one of those people on that stage was from that country. Was it a comic con ? Are we in a fantasy novel? Is this India? You haven’t got a single South Asian dancer?”

The user also reacted to the statement that the cast should not be Indian as the original scene had mostly foreign dancers. “‘He must not be Indian because he is a movie scene!’ Ok so what about the two leads? Why were the two lead dancers dressed and styled to look similar to the South Indian leads instead of portraying the dancing counterparts of those characters to our real countrymen? Use your brain and stop defending those who think you are subhuman.”

Responding to Taha’s post, several users expressed their disappointment over the academy not hiring any Indian-origin dancers for live performances. One user replied, “Like the Oscars are actually in LA and you can’t find at least one Indian person?” Another user wrote, “I think OG was too spicy for him and he needs to tone it down.”

After the Oscars, Kaal Bhairav apologized to Jr NTR and Ram Charan’s fans for not being able to perform the song with the lead stars. In a tweet, he wrote: “I have no doubt that Tarak Anna (Jr NTR) and Ram Charan Anna are the reason for the success of Natu Natu and RRR. I was only talking about who helped me to get a chance for the Academy’s stage performance. Nothing else. I can see that this was expressed in a wrong way and for that I sincerely apologize for my choice of words.

The Naatu Naatu song has a strong anti-colonial theme. In the song that appears in the film RRR, Jr NTR and Ram Charan’s characters dance in front of Caucasian British men and women who say the two are not sophisticated enough to dance among them. The two heroes then break into dizzying hook moves and take down their elite rivals with spectacular moves.
