Eric ten Haag enjoyed a winning start to life as Manchester United manager as the team registered a friendly 4–0 win over Liverpool. The result is unlikely to upset Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp. The German chose an experimental side, while United were almost at full force and Klopp played three different outfield teams for half an hour, including several youngsters in the first two.

Yet United outclassed their biggest rivals with Jadon Sancho, Fred, Anthony Martial and Faisundo Pallistri all on the scoresheet and delighted Ten Haag, who praised the spirit of his side.

He said, ‘I know we have good players, now we have to make a team.

“We don’t have to underestimate this result, we have to be careful. But still I’ve seen some really cool things… We have a lot of creativity and speed, we have the potential.”

There was pre-season experience with Liverpool using over 30 players and United using over 20 players in this encounter.

Liverpool made the best of the opening action and roared from the crowd of 50,000 before United advanced after 12 minutes when a Bruno Fernandez cross was poorly handled by the Liverpool defence, allowing Sancho to fire into the bottom corner. allowed to do so.

United defended a late Liverpool rally and completed the demolition with 14 minutes remaining, plying on an Eric Bailly pass at the palistry counter and converting easily after a one-two with Amad Diallo.

“The goals we set for United should really help us, to be honest,” Klopp said.

“But I also saw great things from my people.”
