Manchester United are reportedly eyeing Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inácio, with the centre-back also a prime target for Newcastle United

Erik ten Haag managed to end Manchester United’s six-year drought this season after winning the Carabao Cup in February. Manchester United still have six matches left in this season’s Premier League but it looks like head coach Ten Haag has already started planning for the summer transfer window.

In addition to finding a suitable figure in the attacking unit, the Dutchman is looking to strengthen the defence. Ten Haag is looking to sign Portuguese centre-back Goncalo Inácio, to strengthen the Manchester United back line. According to O Jogo newspaper, Manchester United have already made contact with the Sporting Lisbon defender’s representatives.

The 21-year-old Goncalo Inácio is regarded as one of the best young defenders in Europe. It is understood that Newcastle United are interested in signing the Portuguese talent. Inácio has played 118 times for Sporting.

With centre-backs Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire rarely playing this season, Manchester United will have to look for some defenders in the summer transfer window. Injuries to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martínez had forced Erik ten Haag to deploy Luke Shaw as a centre-back.

Manchester United are currently placed fourth in the Premier League standings and the Red Devils will need to continue the momentum to secure a Champions League berth. The Old Trafford-based outfit are four points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool.

Manchester United will take on Brighton and Hove Albion in their next match on Friday. Erik ten Haag issued a warning to his players ahead of the Brighton & Hove Albion Test.

“Complacency can lead to laziness, we have six games and we want to win every game. You need full focus, full energy and full preparation. We have to be ready to fight to get the points. We want to win matches; we want to win every competition. It is clear that we want to stay in the Champions League, and that is the competition we are fighting for now. Good is not good enough; we have to do better,” ten Haag told reporters.

Manchester United will be without both Rafael Varane and Lisandro Martinez during the game against Brighton & Hove Albion. In his absence, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof are expected to line up in the Manchester United defence.
