Manipur police officers to contest assembly elections

Brinda Thounaojam was in the limelight when she arrested Loukhoshi Zoo, the president of the Autonomous District Council of Chandel district, with a huge quantity of drugs.

Manipur Police Service’s Vrinda Thounaojam, now Additional Superintendent of Police, announced on Sunday that she will contest the upcoming elections to the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.

Assembly elections are expected to be held next year as the term of the present BJP-led coalition ministry ends on March 16, 2022.

Last month, her Delhi visit sparked political speculation that she may contest on a BJP ticket from Yaskul constituency in Imphal West district. Responding to media reports, she said that she would make a formal announcement of contesting elections in early October. BJP MLA T. Satyavrat, who is a cabinet minister, represents the Yaskul constituency.

On Sunday, Ms Thounaojam said that some other national parties had also invited her to join. “The decision of the people of my constituency Yaiskul will be final,” he said.

She was in the limelight when she arrested the chairman of Autonomous District Council of Chandel district, Loukhoshi Zoo, a few months ago from her Imphal residence with a huge quantity of drugs. Chief Minister N. Biren gave him a citation for his arrest.

However, Xu was released on bail when it was proved that the confiscated drugs belonged to two youths, including his driver. Ms. Thounaojam went to the Chief Minister to return the citation. She reportedly told Mr. Biren that since Xu said she was innocent, she didn’t deserve the certificate.
