Market Live: Sensex, Nifty trade flat amid weak global cues

Investors are closing in on the year by locking in some profits after global equities jumped 17%. Coronavirus, Federal Reserve policy tightening and China’s outlook are among the major risks for next year. Concerns about Omicron are being eased by growing evidence that the rapidly spreading variant appears milder in nature.

Nifty enters critical zone, now all eyes are on financials

After a great recovery yesterday (Monday), there was a good opening today (Tuesday), which cites the positive mood around the world. The index extended its opening lead slightly and crossed the 17200 mark and then slipped into a consolidation mode. Suddenly some profit-booking in the last hour led to a sharp fall in the market. Fortunately this minor drop was bought as Nifty reclaimed 17200 to end the session high of the day.

Last week, around the same time, things were looking a bit bad, but in such a short span of time, we are back in a comfortable safe zone above 17000. Now with the recent price development, the base has moved towards 17000 – 16800 and as long as we don’t slide below it, nothing to worry about. Prior to this, 17100 is to be considered as intraday support. On the other hand, Nifty has now entered a major resistance zone of 17200 – 17300. With reference to the recent comment, if the bulls are to gain their dominance, they need to conquer this strong wall with some authority. To achieve this, it needs solid support from the banking giants, as the initial uptick in the market was primarily driven by the IT counters and now is the time to prove the importance of the financial space. Let’s see how things pan out over the next few seasons as we not only approach the end of the monthly but the calendar year as well.

According to us, if any major action has to be taken, it will be done in the new year itself. Therefore, for the next few days, the practical approach would be to focus on different topics that are consistently providing better trading opportunities.

Asian stocks fall

Most Asian stocks fell on Wednesday as a technology sell-off on US equities and investors assessed the outbreak of the Omicron virus-strain.

Shares fell in Japan, technology stocks declined in Hong Kong, and China declined. US futures were volatile after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 weakened on Tuesday, extending four sessions of gains. Volumes remained low in some markets till the end of the year.

Sentiment in China is weakening on a tighter watch on economic risks from overseas stock sell-offs and a slump in assets. Officials expect to add incentives for continued expansion next year.

Treasury yields fell and the dollar gauge moved higher. Crude oil was at nearly one-month highs partly on the condition that the global correction will be out of Omicron. Bitcoin was near $48,000 after a fall indicating less enthusiasm for the most speculative asset.
