Equities in Japan climbed nearly 1% but slipped in Hong Kong and were volatile in China and South Korea. US futures fell after the S&P 500 closed its 69th record this year, although volumes on Wall Street were below average in the wake of the Christmas holiday.
China’s central bank – which vowed more economic support over the weekend – promoted short-term liquidity injections. Traders also digested new restrictions from Beijing on some offshore listings and a tempting interest payment deadline for property giant China Evergrande Group – whose shares climbed on Tuesday.
US Treasury yields with shorter maturities rose, while yields for longer-term bonds were stable. The dollar had changed little. Oil pushed higher amid stakes that the economic reopening was only a temporary setback from the Omicron virus-strain outbreak.
