Markets start 2022 with a bang: Sensex climbs 929 points to reclaim 59K-mark

The Indian equity market started 2022 on a bullish note on Monday, with the benchmark BSE Sensex rising over 900 points to hit the 59,000 level.

Beginning the session on a confident note, the BSE gauge further consolidated its gains as trade progressed to reach the day’s high of 59,266.39. It finally closed 929.40 points or 1.60% higher at 59,183.22.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty climbed 271.65 points or 1.57% to end at 17,625.70.

Major gainers on the Sensex chart included Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank and HDFC Bank – rising up to 3.50%.

Conversely, Dr Reddy’s, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tech Mahindra and Nestle remained in the red.

The Indian equity market ended the year 2021 at a high on Friday. On the last trading day of 2021, the Sensex closed 459.50 points or 0.80% higher at 58,253.82 and the Nifty was up 150.10 points or 0.87% at 17,354.05.

On a year-on-year basis, the Sensex gained 21.99% or 10,502.49 points and the Nifty gained 24.11% or 3,372.3 points during 2021.

On Monday, the first trading day of 2022, there was a mixed trend in the Asian stock markets.

Hong Kong shares retreated while South Korea’s shares rose. Markets in Japan and China remained closed.

Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude rose 1.49% to $78.94 a barrel.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital market on Friday as they bought shares worth ₹575.39 crore, according to stock exchange data.
