The Maserati MC20 is the first hybrid sports car from the Italian brand.

We first saw the new Maserati MC20 mild-hybrid supercar in September 2020 and now the Italian carmaker is all set to bring it to our shores this year itself. Maserati is gearing up to launch the MC20 in India in the third quarter of 2022 and will apparently be sold as either a completely built unit (CBU) or a completely imported model. With the MC20, Maserati is truly celebrating the brand’s return to racing and on cue, the ‘MC’ in the MC20 stands for Maserati Corse, which is Italian-speak for racing. The numeric ’20’ denotes the year 2020 when the car made its global debut and the brand returned to racing.

At the rear, it gets a horizontal taillight strip and a large diffuser.

The Maserati MC20 retains much of the classic low stance sports car and the doors open upwards. A generous amount of carbon fiber has been used in its construction to keep its weight under control, and it tip the scales at around 1,500 kg, which in turn favors its maneuverability. The huge grille up front with those curtains resonates with its aggressive character, while lots of muscle around its hood and on the wheel arches echo the spirit of adventure to its design. It’s not particularly angular or chiseled to look at as the design language leans towards giving it a bold and sporty demeanor like the Lamborghini Cyan which feels sharp. In fact, it will even remind you of the Rimake Sea 2 electric hypercar. Be it the curve of the windscreen, the tight overhangs, the air intakes on its haunches or the design of its all-LED headlights, everything looks smooth and proportionate.

On the inside, you get two 10.3-inch displays for the infotainment system and instrument cluster.

Inside too, you will find plenty of carbon fiber. The center column, paddle-shifters, and driver-focused steering wheel are finished in a lightweight weave. The rest of the cabin, including the seat, dashboard and door pads, is a mix of Alcantara and stitched leather with blue accents. On the inside, you also get a 10.3-inch touchscreen display that gives access to Maserati’s new Intelligent Assistant (MIA). The driver also gets a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system can be personalized and features the Maserati Connect that alerts the owner to things like service dates and safety features accessible via a smartphone.

Under the hood will be a 3.0-litre, twin-turbo V6 motor named ‘Nettuno’ developed in-house by Maserati. The Italian brand says that the powertrain takes inspiration from the engine of its F1 car and has been tuned to make 621 bhp and 730 Nm of peak torque. It uses dual spark plugs for each cylinder, and the secondary lateral spark plugs are a direct lift from the F1 cars, getting the best possible performance from this powertrain as well as optimizing fuel consumption levels. The engine is mated to an electric motor, so yes, it is a mild-hybrid powertrain, as mentioned earlier.

Talking about the performance, we know that it will take just 2.8 seconds to run from 0-100 kmph and the top speed of the supercar is 310 kmph. The power-to-weight ratio of the MC20 is 2.3 kg per bhp. It gets four driving modes – Vette, GT, Sport and Corsa – which are toggled via the drive mode selector, with a fifth “ESC Off” option that disables traction control entirely. Each mode adjusts settings such as steering weight and throttle response, as well as adaptive suspension. The double-wishbone setup with active shock absorbers propels the car up and down depending on the drive mode.
